Fletcher Benton is known for his sculptural vocabulary of hard-edge geometric forms and bright colors. He upholds Constructivist qualities of economy, efficiency, and purity as he composes sculptures devoid of detail and clutter to reveal the essence of form. In the 1960s, Benton was the only American artist working in the arena of kinetic art, exploring the effect of motion on perception. After several years of experimentation, Benton felt he had exhausted the potential for innovation within the field and abandoned it for freestanding sculpture.

Benton’s “Alphabet” series exemplifies his mastery of form. In these works, Benton begins with a flat, square metal plate with an incised letter in it. He then folds various parts of the letter’s shape out of the original plane to achieve a rigorous and progressive three-dimensional resolution.
