In Radiant Chromosphere (move towards what is approaching), Ranu Mukherjee merged historical accounts and current speculative narratives about Silicon Valley into a fantastical vision of its future. She reflected upon how the sun’s energy was necessary for the fruit orchards that once dominated the landscape and brought in workers for harvest, and how today via solar panels it is a vital power source and facilitates the considerable solar technology industry. In the boughs of the Peruvian Pepper Tree that is Mukherjee’s tree of life symbol for San Jose, past (cherries, oranges, and pears) and present (solar panels) bounties are intertwined.

Beta Space: Ranu Mukherjee: Telling Fortunes (2012)

On average, San Jose has three hundred sunny days per year. It’s no wonder then that the sun’s energy is deeply connected to the economic and social histories of the valley.
