“I think about space as a verb, as an action, as a dynamic process that we are all taking part in,” explained new media artist Shirley Shor. “I re-create space by constantly changing it.” Shor accomplishes her goal by way of what she calls “software installations”: custom software that generates nonrepeating moving images—abstract patterns, colors, and surfaces—that are usually projected into a physical space. Core, however, is one of a series of wall-mounted sculptures. It features a screen embedded within a large, elliptical wooden disk and features the artist’s signature pastel palette, which was inspired by Japanese animation and San Francisco house colors. The activity at the center of the piece contrasts its austere and simple housing.

Edge Conditions Part II (2006)

Although her work occasionally references social and political concerns, Shirley Shor is primarily a formalist working in digital electronics. As she explains, “In my work, I think about space as a verb, as an action, as a dynamic process that we are all taking part in. I recreate space by constantly changing it.” Shor accomplishes this with dynamic software written in a computer language that generates non-repeating moving images—patterns, colors, and surfaces—that are projected onto a physical space. At times, the forms in Core resemble digital maps of the physical world, only to morph into abstract, camouflage-like patterns.
