Sarah Ratchye was raised on a ranch in northern Wyoming. Her interest in the environment led to her training in geology. Both experiences have profoundly influenced her art and continue to provide her with inspiration, particularly in creating landscapes both real and imagined.

In her drawings of the Moon’s surface, Ratchye recorded her sense of an astronaut’s impressions of the unfamiliar wasteland. She shows light and dark areas, paying close attention to the pitted surface and possible signs of extraterrestrial presence. Twawl en th’ MoonlIt prpl is part of a series of mixed-media works that Ratchye calls “drapery surveillance drawings.” In this playful, yet poignant series, Ratchye uses the landscape of the Moon as the setting for an idealized pastoral scene often found in Toile de Jouy patterns. She imagines what life would be like on the Moon—as a future possibility for humankind—and how its surface might change with colonization.
