Rise Up! Social Justice in Art from the Collection of J. Michael Bewley (2018)
At the age of eighteen, Luis Cruz Azaceta fled Cuba for New York in the wake of Fidel Castro’s rise to power. Azaceta’s work is marked by a sense of isolation—an exile’s experience of belonging neither to the homeland nor the adopted country. His figures, often self-portraits, appear trapped and tortured, a poignant commentary on the plight of Cubans in their home country and the pervasive prejudice enacted upon immigrants in the United States.
