Tales from the Kiln: Contemporary Ceramics (2005-2006)

Ron Nagle worked for many years as an assistant to abstract sculptor Peter Voulkos in the ceramics department at U.C. Berkeley. However, Nagle’s vibrant colors and sophisticated glazes are perhaps more closely aligned with L.A.’s Finish Fetish artists, who were drawn to the brilliant colors and immaculate surfaces of custom cars and surfboards. Fat Twin to a Thin Fin resembles two fins—like those typically seen on a surfboard—one fat, one thin. We are left to compare and ponder the two opposing forms and their possible functions.
