The House Imaginary (2018)

For this series of prints, Roger Shimomura found inspiration in some of his earliest childhood memories: the two years during World War II that he and his family spent at the Minidoka War Relocation Center in Idaho. Like hundreds of thousands of people of Japanese ancestry around the United States, Shimomura and his family were forced to leave their homes and lives and reside in temporary shelters. These prints are filled with the artist’s memories of visits from friends, celebrating his birthday and Christmas, and ubiquitous barbed wire and wooden shacks—reminders of the freedom his family was denied.

Bookish (2011-2012)

Roger Shimomura says that all of his work “is inspired by stories, or leads into stories.” For this series of prints, Shimomura found inspiration in some of his earliest childhood memories: the two years during World War II that he and his family spent at the Japanese internment facility Camp Minidoka in Idaho. Shimomura’s simplified imagery in these prints reflects his interest in Pop Art and the graphic style, bold outlines, and flat areas of color seen in comic books. These prints are filled with his memories of visits from friends, celebrating his birthday and Christmas, and the ubiquitous barbed wire that separated his family from freedom.
