Robin Kandel begins her paintings with her childhood memories and family history, but leaves room for the viewer’s own memories and experiences. Since 2009, she has focused largely on water—specifically depicting how light and wind interact with its sensitive surface. Raised near lakes in Michigan, Kandel views water in both elemental and nostalgic terms, and uses her “lakewater” series as an exercise in methodical observation. Influenced by moiré, a type of fabric with a wavy appearance, Kandel made close studies of water in order to capture its restless fluidity, thereby creating an entrancing, rhythmic pattern that shifts according to viewing angle.
