SJMA Label Text

Renegade Humor (2012)

Ray Beldner addresses in his work the American preoccupation with accumulating wealth. In his series “Counterfeit,” Beldner considered the notion of an object’s monetary value as against factors such as its historical, political, or social significance. By painstakingly sewing together actual bills, Beldner has parodied masterpieces of twentieth-century art by Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and Marcel Duchamp, among others. Three More Flags is a direct reference to Jasper Johns’s famous Three Flags (1958).
