NOBODYWINSWHOFIGHTSALONE
2009
48 x 84 x 3 in. (121.92 x 213.36 x 7.62 cm)
Markus Linnenbrink (Dortmund, Germany, 1961 - ) Primary
Local Color (2012-2013)
Markus Linnenbrink uses bold, vibrant colors in his paintings, sculptures, and floor pieces. His colored stripes, lines, and expansive areas recall the work of Color Field painter Morris Louis (1912 – 1962), while his gestural, abstract expressionist technique links his work to that of Jackson Pollock (1912 – 1956). However, instead of using traditional oil or acrylic paints, Linnenbrink works with epoxy resin. He explained: “I was curious about materials and wanted to experiment with something not everyone was using. There are other painters who work with resin, but people mostly use it to add to a shiny surface. I like shininess, too, but I feel like I’m able to really use its possibilities.”
In NOBODYWINSWHOFIGHTSALONE, Linnenbrink applied many layers of brightly colored epoxy resin onto a panel and then, after the liquid dried, used a router to drill out circles. These crater-shaped forms, which the artist calls “drills,” expose the vibrant cross-sections of the color layers. The colorful craters play with the eye, simultaneously pushing out and receding from the picture plane.
Local Color, July 26, 2012 - January 13, 2013, New Wing, Second Floor, Central Skylight and South Metro A Galleries, San José Museum of Art.
