Initial Public Offering: New Works from SJMA’s Permanent Collection (2014)
Marc Pally explores form and pictorial language in his abstract, mixed-media paintings. In He Will Never Get It (1987), chance interactions between the materials he employed affected the composition. For example, just below the center is a graphite drawing that Pally identified as an airplane. When he varnished the airplane, the graphite smeared and the lines of the drawing were blurred. This accident served to unite the foreground and background and call attention to areas in the composition where layered imagery seems to pull away from the pictorial plane. It is within these tensions that Pally thrives and finds his creative ambition.
