Beyond Tradition: Permanent Collection Photographs (2003-2004)

Described as a “poet of the ordinary” by Los Angeles Times critic Christine McKenna, Keith Carter is best known for his black-and-white photographs of still lifes and individuals, including dogs and humans. His use of selective and split-focus techniques, perspective, and tonal effects result in timeless, quiet images imbued with a poetic sensibility, such as this photograph of a collection of canes with their silver-tipped handles, one in the shape of a soulful dog’s head.
