Juicy Paint (2009-2010)

A vanguard painter and pioneering printmaker, U.C. Berkeley Professor Emeritus Karl Kasten has had a career spanning more than half a century and touching many major movements. Avidly experimenting with techniques, materials, and subject matter, he has maintained freshness and the element of surprise in his works. is a fine example of Kasten’s Abstract Expressionist style, which features non-referential compositions with linear and textural qualities. In , thick patches of greens, reds, and blues are centered within a neutral background. By outlining the forms in contrasting colors, Kasten has given them depth and definition: the textured, irregular shapes seem to pull and push the viewer’s eye, creating a kind of organic movement.
