Shoreline (1961) reflects Karl Kasten’s participation in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Typical of that mode of painting, combines patches of rich color with spontaneous gestural brushwork. The painting is defined by a sense of rhythmic vitality rather than bold impact. Kasten states, “I consider [] probably the best of my paintings done at that time…the form and color were developed in a restrained manner, that is, the 'action painting' aspect is not as forceful as was popular with many artists in those years.” Despite the relative downplay of “action,” Kasten's attention to linear and textural variety resulted in a painting of great vigor and energy.
