Kara Maria merges popular culture with images of war to unsettling effect. In her work, Maria explores the relationship between politics, pornography, and America’s military ventures through a combination of loose, gestural brushwork and superbly rendered figures and corporate logos. Deployment in Wonderland features several miniature soldiers who have come upon a large, voluptuous, naked woman lying on her side. While a few soldiers walk on her body and peek out of the crevices of her legs and arms, others with their guns raised patrol the open area in front of her as if guarding their prize.
