Tales from the Kiln: Contemporary Ceramics (2005-2006)
John Roloff’s mysterious and enigmatic ceramic sculpture recalls the shape of a sailing vessel—a subject that has fascinated the artist throughout most of his life. First drawn to the sea as a young boy with ambitions to study marine biology, Roloff found himself in the midst of the figurative ceramics movement at U.C. Davis in the late 1960s. There, he also discovered 19th-century painters like Caspar David Friedrich and J.W. Turner. Their dramatic seascapes featuring ships cast adrift in icy, ocean storms, continue to inspire his own ceramic sculpture.
