City Limits, City Life (2014-2015)

As a German emigrant to the United States in 1933, Gutmann was fascinated by American popular culture. Originally a painter, turned photojournalist, Gutmann pulls from Constructivists influences to create his images. Lunch Hour, San Francisco depicts an ad hoc game of baseball pinched by the tall buildings framing the improvised field. Working men from the surrounding city streets form a crowd eager to indulge in the sport during a quick break from daily duties.
