Using simple techniques and embracing the accidental, John DiPaolo has been making abstract oil paintings for the last thirty years. His work often has a strong gestural quality and uses weighty, thick paint to express physicality and explosive movement. In Big Abstract (Diptych), DiPaolo juxtaposed thick and thin. In some areas, a generous application of paint takes on three dimensions, while a reductive touch in other areas leaves bare canvas visible. Large, rapid brushstrokes emphasize the painting’s surface and contribute to its energy and immediacy.
