Shopping Mall Studies and Ephemera
1973-1977
in. (cm)
James Doolin (Hartford, Connecticut, 1932 - 2002, Los Angeles, California)
Real and HyperReal, January 30, 2010 - August 1, 2010, New Wing, First Floor, Gibson Family and Plaza Galleries, San José Museum of Art.
Real and HyperReal (2010)
Doolin worked methodically on this ninety-by-ninety inch canvas. He began in the upper left-hand corner, painted the perimeter, and gradually spiraled inward. The artist depicted himself at the center of the composition, casting the longest shadow. In order to render the numerous exacting details, he worked out every aspect of this scene in sketchbooks, drawings, watercolors, and preparatory paintings. The mundane cars, pedestrians going about their daily routines, and street façades become extraordinary when the disparate elements coalesce in the final composition.
