Inside Out: Selections from the Permanent Collection (2004-2006)
James Doolin transforms the urban blight of Los Angeles into enchanting visions. Light is his forte, and he often depicts the glow of the city at night. In this twilight scene, Doolin masterfully mixes the illusion of natural light with iridescent neon, their reflections glimmering on the rainy pavement. What makes the painting so compelling is the juxtaposition of the fortune-teller's sign and the empty billboard looming above it. Doolin seems to be suggesting that the future is unknown, a blank slate waiting to be filled.
