Breaking Ground: Gifts from Katie and Drew Gibson (2013)

George Herms is one of the founders of the California Assemblage movement of the 1950s. Along with Ed Kienholz, Wallace Berman, and Bruce Conner, he created sculpture out of found objects and thereby blurred the line between life and art. Herms was influenced by the Beat era and the improvisational nature of jazz--concepts of which he explored in his art-making process. Drama is a late-career example of how Herms gives discarded materials new life as investigations of form and composition.
