Artists in Residence: San Jose's 20th Century Vanguard (2016)

Fred Spratt’s paintings are studies of intensity, flatness, saturation, and hue. His largely monochromatic square and rectangular works respond to Minimalism, an extreme form of non-representational art that emerged in the late 1960s. His investigations of material, color, and space are rooted in childhood memories of the unending expanses of farmland and the cornflower-blue skies of his native Iowa. Regarding his practice, Spratt remarked, “The convention of painting seems a good way—a simple way—to reflect the experiences more felt than seen, that are the magic moments.”
