A Culture of Spontaneity: San Francisco Abstract Expressionism From the Permanent Collection (2008 –2009)
Ernest Briggs moved to Greenwich Village in 1953, after which art historian Irving Sandler labeled him a second-generation artist of the New York School. This painting shows that he had already achieved the style for which he was best known. Briggs’s solo exhibition that year at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor featured several oils like this worked with a palette knife, suggesting dynamic forces at work and alluding to geological processes through patterns reminiscent of rocky veins and fissures. Reviewing this show, Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti wrote: “It is as if . . . there were a great wind blowing through all his painting.”
