from the exhibition Visual Politics: The Art of Engagement, 2005-2006.

Like most Americans, Erle Loran was deeply moved by America’s involvement in World War II. In San Francisco Burning II, Loran imagines the city under attack and set ablaze by fiery explosions—a direct reference to public concerns about San Francisco’s vulnerability to the Japanese threat during the war. Although noted for his plein-air landscape paintings produced during his affiliation with the Berkeley School watercolorists, Loran was also an art professor at UC Berkeley. He saw the military deployment of many of his students during the war, notably Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, and Karl Kasten. Loran’s catastrophic vision was surely a response to the anxiety he experienced during those years.
