Shortly after his move from San Francisco to Point Richmond, California, in 1950, Edward Corbett began using a palette of rich, deep blacks and occasional soft grays. Corbett’s expansive monochromatic surfaces and rugged, stubbly textures link his paintings directly to the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism. However, unlike contemporaries such as Frank Lobdell or Clyfford Still (1904 – 1980), Corbett’s “Black Paintings” are devoid of clear forms and dramatic emotion. Instead, broad expanses of black pigment, either thickly layered or thinly applied, evoke a sense of solitude and desolation. The absence of recognizable images was intended by Corbett to prod the imagination. The soft, misty textures in Untitled (Black Painting) suggest the atmospheric effects of fog, which the artist liked to watch coming through the San Francisco Bay.
