Character Studies: Clay from the Collection (2015-2016)
Dennis Gallagher was inspired by everyday objects and shapes. He found beauty in forms that are usually overlooked or not considered as subjects for sculpture. Gallagher identified these moments in everyday life, then isolated and expanded the form in order to emphasize the surprising charm of simple shapes.
Untitled simultaneously makes reference to ancient architectural ruins and gestures to an urban landscape. The large stacked blocks convey a sense of precarious balance. Opposing forces introduce a feeling of tension: the weighty, vertical slabs challenge the forces of gravity; rough, gouged, and scored surfaces contrast with elegant shapes; and abstraction deconstructs identifiable, daily objects.
