Sliced Yew
2001
72 1/2 x 35 1/2 x 27 1/2 in. (184.15 x 90.17 x 69.85 cm)
David Nash (Esher, Surrey, England, 1945 - )
It's About Time: Celebrating 35 Years (2004-2005)
Inspired by the unique qualities of each piece of wood—its natural grain, growth patterns, and tendency to split—David Nash responds to the personality of different trees. On his own farm in North Wales called Ca’en-y Coed’ (the Field in the Trees), Nash watches their individual characteristics develop, seeing some as aggressive and brutal and others as passive and gentle. To make many of his sculptures, including , Nash wields a chainsaw to sculpt elegant, delicate forms, repeating and emphasizing certain natural qualities of the wood.
From the cycle of growth and decay
I borrow a part and prime it;
a simple idea applied to the qualities
and circumstances of each time and place.
— David Nash
