It’s a Small World: Scale in Contemporary Photography (2006-2007)

Since the 1970s, David Levinthal has photographed elaborate miniature sets inhabited by plastic soldiers, cowboys, and movie stars. Using objects that traditionally connote innocence, Levinthal depicts grim scenes of war and genocide, blending the familiar with the unsettling. The "Mein Kampf" series (1993-1994) narrates Hitler’s rise to power and the Nazi campaign to exterminate all Jews. Levinthal’s untitled photograph depicts a horrific occurrence, but the rich red hue and sensual forms are also beautiful and seductive.
