Inspired by the wunderkammer or “wonder room” of the seventeenth century, Darren Waterston originally conceived of Corpus No. 1 and Corpus No. 2 as part of a gallery-scale installation of found, collected, and artist-constructed objects: biological specimens and book pages, anatomies and artifacts, totems and talismans, along with a series of paintings and works on paper. Filled with curiosities from around the world, the “wonder room” of the late Renaissance attempted to categorize and tell stories about the oddities of the natural world. Though Waterston evoked such sensibilities in Corpus No. 1 and Corpus No. 2, his silhouettes of various flora and fauna purposefully leave much to the imagination. As Waterston explained, “Much of my artistic practice is about trying to disengage from material embodiment, to ‘represent’ that disengagement if you will.”
