Visual Politics: The Art of Engagement (2005-2006)

Bruce Hasson’s sculptural bells have commemorated a variety of national and international political events. Millenium Bell #2, a small version of a much larger bell entitled Millenia, is made entirely from melted guns. On the occasion of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates of the 21st Century held in Rome in 2000, Mikhail Gorbachev and Rome’s Mayor Francesco Rutelli struck the bell in the presence of Laureates Lech Walesa, Betty Williams, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Joseph Rotblat, and a Lama Representative of the Dalai Lama. According to Mayor Rutelli, Millenia “was made by melting down weapons [and] guns confiscated by the American police…to create a symbol of transformation into an instrument of peace.”
