Beyond Tradition: Permanent Collection Photographs
(2003-2004)

Beverly Rayner uses photographs, both ones she has taken herself and anonymous photographs found in flea markets, in a “very physical manner.” She first encases them in beeswax and then meticulously nails them into a black wood frame. The results are beautifully evocative fusions of photography and sculpture. For Rayner, this work depicts “the process and sensations associated with recalling images from one’s dreams.” The grid of seemingly unrelated pictures alludes to the way dream imagery often becomes conscious in disparate, puzzle-like visions.
