Bean Finneran’s installation-based ceramic sculptures evoke colorful, vibrant organic forms. For several years, Finneran has been working with a single, graceful form: “a curve [that] is a meditation upon multiplicity in nature.” Yellow Cone (14,000curves) is constructed of more than fourteen thousand hand-rolled clay rods. The form suggests a haystack, beehive, or pine tree, but Finneran’s inspiration comes more from the idea of nature than any specific features. Instead, she explained: “the many thousands of individual elements in each piece are not physically connected as another reflection of the natural process...with its deliberately un-natural color, the work celebrates aspects of nature, but does not attempt to mimic it.” For Finneran, her time-consuming process of hand-rolling, glazing, and then carefully placing each component curve (she relies on gravity instead of adhesives to maintain the conelike form), celebrates color and art-making itself.
