The House Imaginary (2018)

In these prints, An Te Liu has used aerial photographs of Levittown, New York—the first postwar suburban track home development in the United States—as the basis of his designs. He cut and mirrored the image to create a fractured yet systematic pattern that emphasizes the inherently generic quality of suburban developments across the country. The term “pattern language” refers to concerns that arise during the architectural and civil design process, such as how a subdivision should be laid out, or where windows should be placed in a room. By using the tract neighborhood as the basic compositional unit for a wall paper pattern, Liu ironically renders the modular design aspirations of the suburbs as mere décor.

Local Color (2012-2013)

An Te Liu incorporates concepts from architecture to create work that makes us think about the spaces we live in. and are prints from Liu’s “Pattern Language I” and “Pattern Language II” series, respectively. The series refer to common problems that arise during the civil and architectural design process, such as how cities should be laid out or where windows should be placed in a room. In each print, Liu used as the basis for his design an aerial photograph of Levittown, Long Island, New York, the first suburban tract home development in the United States, built in 1947 – 51. He cut and mirrored the image to create a symmetrically ordered abstract pattern, which he printed on colored vinyl. The repetition of houses and saturated colors gives the effect of wallpaper, and recalls the colorful geometric and floral pattern décor of Federalist style homes (1740 – 1840), another inspiration for the artist.

Variations on a Theme (2009-2010)

Artist An Te Liu's prints depict repeated images of tract homes. Suburban sprawl is also delineated in the scroll-like quality of the pieces which underlines the expansiveness of the identical houses. Each print is reproduced in one saturated color that, in combination with the repetition of houses, gives the effect of wallpaper upon which one gazes and becomes entranced by the meditative pattern. The series name, Pattern Language, refers to common problems of civil and architectural design, from how cities should be laid out to where windows should be placed in a room.
