Artists in Residence: San Jose's 20th Century Vanguard (2016)

Tony May reconstructs familiar ideas as he maintains the importance of craftsmanship intertwined with a penchant for the conceptual. Dada pioneer Marcel Duchamp, best known for his tongue-in-cheek readymades, is a particular influence on May’s use of humor and pun. May believes in the hands-on involvement of the artist and in unprecious, essential materials: canvas, rope, wood, and everyday hardware. He manipulates the dynamic between words and visuals to highlight the delightful pleasure of play. By challenging our preconceived notions of the ordinary, he prompts us to reconsider the structures of thought and association.
