To create Man with Wife, Anthony Aziz began with a vintage photograph of a man and a woman standing next to each other. Using computer manipulation, Aziz blacked out the male figure so that the woman seems to stand next to a shadow. He then trimmed the image with printed fabric, alluding to a domestic interior, or perhaps to a man's necktie. Taking on an actively performative role, the artist physically "cut the man out of the picture." By eliminating this father, brother, or friend, Aziz called out an absence that could have both personal and universal significance.
