Artists in Residence: San Jose's 20th Century Vanguard (2016)

Stephen French’s early serigraphs are emblematic of his Minimalist sensibility and eye for bold design. French followed this reductivist aesthetic throughout his career. In Leda and the Swan (Ode to Jay DeFeo), French addressed the Greek mythological story of Leda, who was seduced and raped by the god Zeus in the form of a swan. Each scene reveal’s French’s mastery of shape and abstraction that has predicated his prolific body of work.
