Although best known for his photography, Larry Sultan also did many public art projects during his lifetime. For Have You Seen Me?, Sultan and his wife, Kelly, worked with elementary and high school students in San Rafael, California to tell the stories of endangered children in their community. Taking as their model milk cartons that picture missing people, they paired images and stories of four children, each on a brown paper grocery sack. The bag prints were to be given out to shoppers at a local food store chain. Unfortunately, because of the controversy that erupted over the story of the boy (hiding his face to avoid recognition) who entered the United States illegally to live with his grandmother, the bags were distributed only upon request. The children’s stories of war, loss, and hardship poignantly demonstrate the authenticity of personal narrative and the powerful effect of its distribution.
