The House Imaginary (2018)

Eccentric line quality, active surfaces, and distorted figures characterize local artist Gertrude Bleiberg’s playful and personal representations of home. Bleiberg, who started working as an artist in her fifties, hones her prints and paintings to reflect the essence of ordinary life—her own experiences, family, and neighbors in Palo Alto—by celebrating the joyful, baffling, and amusing every day. In this selection, the particular energy of her life comes through in expressive representations of a misshapen front door, eccentric dining-room rug, and quivering easy chair.
