The Crooked Timber
2010
8 1/2 x 6 7/8 x 1/4 in. (21.59 x 17.46 x 0.64 cm)
Chester Arnold (Santa Monica, California, 1952 - )
Bookish (2011-2012)
Chester Arnold often writes poems to accompany his paintings and includes them on the back of the canvases. In the limited edition , he paired elegant, simple, brown-ink prints with related poems. The Crooked Timber: Selected Poems accompanies a body of work based on a quotation from Immanuel Kant: “Out of the crooked timber of humanity no straight thing was ever made.” Arnold included a delicate etching of a gnarled fallen tree in the book. Arnold explains that the poems “aren't really made to exist as literature but as an adjunct to the image. It's not like it's an illustration with a poem; they're just two things that were churned up at the same time."
Bookish, September 25, 2011 - January 15, 2012, 2nd Floor, South Gallery, San José Museum of Art.
