Bookish (2011-2012)
As a young man, Rick Arnitz was drafted into the Army and served as a radio operator. In these paintings, he used the dots and dashes of Morse Code visually to represent the attributes of the ideal Boy Scout enumerated in the titles: brave, thrifty, reverent, helpful, and obedient.
Inside Out: Selections from the Permanent Collection (2004-2006)
Rick Arnitz calls himself a “quasi-radical who is no longer political.” As a young man, he was drafted into the Army and served as a radio operator. After ten months and four days he was discharged as a conscientious objector. Here he uses the dots and dashes of Morse Code to visually represent the adjectives named in the titles—brave, thrifty, reverent, helpful, and obedient—the characteristics of an ideal Boy Scout.
