Visual Politics: The Art of Engagement (2005-2006)
Beyond Manzanar is an interactive virtual reality environment that explores the way the U.S. government has repeatedly demonized ethnic populations during times of crisis. The artists, who are Japanese American and Iranian American, provide the viewer with a glimpse of internment experiences during World War II and the subsequent mistreatment of Arab Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979-80. Although created before September 11, Beyond Manzanar reminds us that Muslim Americans continue to be unjustly singled out in the wake of ongoing terrorist attacks.
