Inside Out: Selections from the Permanent Collection (2004-2006)

In 1971, Clayton Bailey began building wacky robots from found-metal objects and vintage appliances. To animate the otherwise stationary creatures, Bailey adds blinking lights and humorous sound devices, thereby imbuing each creature with its own distinct personality. is watchful and reserved as he silently counts the minutes, surveying the scene before him with flashing red eyes. , on the other hand, seems flirtatious and playful with her buxom chest and voluptuous, hourglass figure. Animated and frisky, looks up expectantly, begging for attention. Despite their quirky personalities, this robot family is both intriguing and thought provoking. Viewers are invited to consider the myriad ways in which the “past lives” of objects such as brake pedals, teapots, desk lamps, and clocks inform the sculpture.
