So, Who Do You Think You Are? (2011-2012)
Vik Muniz’s photographic work often alludes to well-known images from art history and pop culture. In Self-Portrait (I am too sad to tell you, after Bas Jan Ader), Muniz appropriated imagery from the performance film work I’m too sad to tell you (1971) by Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader (1942 – 1975). Employing an assortment of plastic toys, crayons, and building blocks, Muniz arranged the objects in his photograph into a likeness of himself, mimicking the anguished expression Ader wore throughout his film. By using children’s toys to outline the contours of his face, hand, and arm, Muniz brought a touch of playfulness to a self-portrait that deals with grief and remorse.
