Inside Out: Selections from the Permanent Collection (2004-2006)
Since the 1960s, when American Pop artists were elevating ordinary objects to extraordinary icons, Raimonds Staprans has looked to the everyday things he encounters in his studio for his subject matter.
His prismatic palette has been compared to that of Wayne Thiebaud, but his color combinations are more subdued. This painting shows Staprans at his most elegant, with its subtle harmony of close-hued grays and spare leaks of color at the edges. With restrained brushwork and a minimal composition, he imbues two ordinary paint cans with a venerable presence.
Collection Highlights (2002-2003)
Since the 1960s, Raimonds Staprans has painted the everyday objects he encounters in his studio. With restrained brushwork, he imbues the subject of two ordinary paint cans with stately presence.
Staprans’s prismatic palette has been compared to Wayne Thiebaud’s, but he clearly has developed a distinct sensibility that is more subdued. This painting shows Staprans at his most elegant, with its subtle harmony of close-hued grays.
