from the exhibition It's About Time: Celebrating 35 Years, 2004-2005.

Irving Norman’s monumental canvases present complex narratives that typically confront the universal horrors of war and deliver shocking indictments of corporate greed. Awakening of the City, with its congested freeway overpasses and impossibly cramped offices, depicts the artist’s view of the inhumane working conditions of capitalistic America. The towering skyscrapers fuse together like a giant machine devouring the workers streaming into the city, while neon signs flash constant reminders of the almighty dollar.
