Beyond Tradition (2003-2004)
David Levinthal’s series, “Wild West,” recreates the movie myth of the American west in dramatic mock “film stills” made from miniature toys in staged dioramas that the artist describes as “faux-realistic.” Blurring the line between fact and fiction, Levinthal purposely obscures the faces and distorts the focus to activate the scene with implied motion and drama. In the same spirit of exaggerated Westerns, Levinthal’s photographs are parodies that possess a riveting fiction of their own. A self-described product of TV culture, Levinthal is primarily interested in eliciting emotional responses to our shared memories of nostalgic imagery from popular culture and childhood.
