Jane Hammond (Bridgeport, Connecticut, 1950 - )
Renegade Humor (2012)
Jane Hammond seeks to align painting—perhaps the oldest visual art form—with the incredible surfeit and constant assault of imagery that defines contemporary life. For her paintings, she draws from a pool of 276 pictorial representations maintained in a filing system in her studio. This collection includes images from nineteenth-century technical manuals, antique children’s books, manuals on magic tricks, botanical guides, and pornographic comics. Hammond customarily titles her paintings as “Untitled” followed by a series of numbers that refer to the catalogued images in her archive. Individually, these images are simple and straightforward, but grouped together, they conjure scenes such as this wild menagerie. Like the Surrealists, Hammond allows her subconscious to direct her selection of images and the composition of her work. She likens her process of image construction to a charm bracelet: the order does not matter—all pieces have their own importance but together they have a larger significance.
Renegade Humor, February 3, 2012 - July 8, 2012, New Wing, Second Floor, Central Skylight and South Metro A Galleries, San José Museum of Art.
