Variations on a Theme (2009-2010)

This self-portrait depicts Llyn Foulkes’s nemesis, Mickey Mouse, offering the artist a big kiss. Since the early sixties, Foulkes has taken on the corruption of American culture as a personal burden. For the artist, Mickey Mouse epitomizes the soullessness and commercialism that has come to dominate American culture. Yet here he shows that even he is susceptible to the cartoon character’s all-pervasive cultural influence. Despite the seemingly comic exaggeration of his plight, Foulkes is completely serious — deeply aware of being at odds with a society that thrives on manipulative corporate interests.
