Manuel Neri began exploring new forms and materials in figurative sculpture and painting in the early 1950s in San Francisco. During this period, Neri's peers were likewise combining the Abstract Expressionist style with their renewed interest in the human figure. Neri began sculpting in "junk"—burlap, wire, cardboard—and soon turned to simple plaster. His naturally elegant, virtuoso style mixes with the raw materials and energy of California "funk" art to make an explosive combination. From the onset, Neri made violent marks on the "skin" of his figures and then added patches of bright colored paint. In his later cast-bronze sculptures, such as Untitled (Kneeling Figure), his use of the classic tradition of bronze sculpture expresses the timelessness of his forms while the painted surfaces conjure a sense of immediacy..png)
