Inside Out: Selections from the Permanent Collection (2004-2006)

Beginning in 1994, F. Scott Hess began producing a psychologically charged series of paintings entitled The Hours of the Day. Loosely referring to the medieval and Renaissance devotional manuscripts known as the Book of Hours, Hess's complex, ambiguous narratives unfold over the course of a single day in contemporary Los Angeles. The final painting of the series, Night Gardener's Escape, takes place at 4:00 a.m. on the grounds of a house that Hess modeled on the St. Rémy asylum where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last years of his life. With a look of despondency, the night gardener-perhaps a cultivator of dreams?-gazes toward the heavens as if seeking some peaceful resolution.
